Murray Main Street's success is based on a comprehensive strategy of work
carried out in four areas called the “Main Street Four Point Approach”.
We tailor our annual work plan and all activities to meet our local needs
and opportunities. A carefully planned Main Street program can help shift
public perceptions and practices to help sustain the revitalization
process. Murray Main Street strives to work rigorously in the following
four areas so that our community can realize and experience the benefits
of a revitalized and successful downtown.

information)
Design
– Getting downtown into top physical shape by preserving and enhancing its
assets.
Economic
Restructuring
– Strengthening the existing economic base of downtown and finding ways to
expand its potential and meet new opportunities and challenges from
outlying development.
Organization
– Building
and operating a program that meets the needs and challenges of downtown
revitalization efforts.
Promotion – Creating and bringing events to the
central business district. Marketing downtown’s assets to shoppers,
investors, new businesses, local citizens, and visitors.

Future plans
Murray Main Street will be
focusing on economic development and promotions as now that
Streetscape completed. Physical changes are just
one aspect of what Murray Main Street does.
Murray Main Street has now turned its focus toward the courthouse and old post office
projects. These are both projects receiving funding through
Renaissance Kentucky". Currently the courthouse is being
updated with new paint, electrical work and new cooper roof on the clock
tower and much more. Renovation on the old post office will begin in
summer.
We also have several downtown
businesses which have been approved for facade
projects. Now that the weather is improving, you will see many
buildings getting a face-lift.
As part of the economic
restructuring plan Murray Main Street is hoping to focus on trying to fill
vacant buildings downtown, help businesses with marketing, assist with
writing business plans and help create web sites. We want to help
them with tools they can use to help grow and expand their business.
We also hope to draw in prominent
events to the downtown area. One example of a downtown event which
has been well received is the Saturday Market. It
helps keep our downtown busy and bustling on Saturday mornings.
Other possible events include
outdoor concerts, Christmas activities on the square and of course the
July 4th activities. We hope to begin adding more types of activities to try to
bring people back downtown.
Another item Murray Main Street
has worked on is getting Murray established as a National Register District.
We should have office approval by May 2003.
We have plans to expand our
Renaissance area. Currently, we are working to identify the areas of
downtown Murray for the expansion. We have a one-time opportunity
for a Renaissance Boundary expansion which will allow more property owners
access to revitalization funding for their building which will in turn
increase the value of the property as well as help the vitality of our
downtown.
Our goal is to
continue to improve the economic climate downtown.
