Main Street and “the four point approach” represent a comprehensive strategy to downtown revitalization.  Both the public and private sectors have unique skills and areas where they are effective. Combining the talents of both groups brings together all the skills necessary to attack downtown’s problems and create and foster positive change.  The members of the Organization Committee help pull it all together.

Accomplishments of the Organization committee:

·        Board with five standing committees

·        Achieved the highest program membership in the state with over 375 members

·        Hosted several “town meetings” for public input and discussion on downtown planning and streetscape development

·        Act as part of the “project management team” for streetscape construction

·        Published a “streetscape booklet” to help downtown businesses through construction.

·        We help put economic incentive packages together for people interested in purchasing or rehabilitating downtown property.

·        We work with current and potential business owners on business planning.

·        The Organization Committee led Murray Main Street to victory by winning the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s membership initiative.  It brought our community national attention as we were honored by Richard Moe at last years National Town Meeting in Indianapolis.  We were recognized in Preservation Magazine and Main Street news.

·        Organization oversees our annual membership drive and engraved brick sales to help keep community involvement strong and to keep revenue coming into the program.

·        The Main Street office provides information and materials on preservation, façade grants, building renovation and restoration, loan pool funding, compliance with state and federal guidelines and the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation.  We work directly with contractors and provide technical support on aspects of downtown preservation and restoration construction.

·        We wrote a training guide on “How to Successfully Fulfill Your RFP” for KY Main Street. It is now part of all Main Street and RENKY training material.

·        Our Manager Deana Wright is a state certified Manager completing a year of extensive training and testing . She graduated as salutatorian from the 2001 class of Main Street Managers.

Considered a “classroom” and model for the state, Murray Main Street has consulted  with several KY communities including, Bowling Green, Marion, Elkton, Cadiz, Paducah and Hopkinsville among others.
